Paternity Testing - Are You Raising Someone Else's Child?

The dawn of the DNA test

Back in the 1700s, the best way to determine paternity was by a good hard look and the child, followed by a good hard look at the father. Enough coincidences and maybe a relationship could be proposed. A hundred years later, eye color was discovered to be a paternity identifier. This theory has had its flaws exposed because of recent DNA advances. We now know that eye color is determined by at least six alleles, or genetic markers. Paternity testing has become a lot easier and affordable over the past few years due to advances in DNA science. Although an estimated 200,000 DNA tests are conducted each year by states needing to sort child-support and welfare issues, few people are willing to conduct their own at-home paternity test. They don't realize the simplicity and convenience of an at-home paternity test.

How does a home DNA test work?

Paternity testing requires a painless sample from both the child and possible father. Even without a sample from the mother, DNA paternity test results are up to 99.9999% accurate-that's one-in-a-million odds your results are incorrect. Most companies provide a free home kit for you to provide the samples and require you to send the kit back to the laboratory with the accompanying fee.

Because many companies are aware of the discomfort of drawing blood from a child in order to get a sample, buccal (mouth) swabs are being accepted as an alternative. By gently massaging the inside of the child's mouth, cheek cells are collected. These cells are then sent to the lab for testing. Labs analyze up to sixteen genetic markers of the child and match them against the markers of the alleged father. Because each of us receives half our genetic markers from each parent, the results of DNA paternity testing are still accurate without the DNA information of the mother. Most labs will have results in 10 days and charge about $290 for a basic paternity verification test.

What else can a DNA test do?

DNA kits can also be used to analyze siblingship, establish cousin or grandparent relationships, determine twin zygosity (i.e. whether twins are fraternal or identical), identify ancestral origin, verify Native American decent, assure parents they left the hospital with the right baby, and most important, provide legal evidence-be prepared to pay a bit more for legal tests. Legal tests can be used to settle adoption issues, settle child-support disputes, and provide information for immigration files.

How to choose a DNA laboratory

  • Accreditation is a vital part of choosing a laboratory. Accredited labs have an annual audit and inspection, undergo internal and external reviews, and have their equipment calibrated for accuracy. Look for an ISO and/or AABB certification. Accredited labs will have a good reputation and near 100% track record for court cases.
  • Look for hidden fees. Some companies will charge you for the kit and then charge you again for the results. Also, double check when you order your kit that you're only buying the results you need.
  • Ask about privacy. Make sure that your identity and intentions are kept secure.
  • Enjoy piece of mind

Be confident that the questions you have can be answered. DNA testing is safe and stress-free. Find a free kit and an information packet and you're on your way to getting the piece of mind that you deserve.

    BNP Sheffield candidate praises Hitler

If anyone wonders whether the BNP is led by closet Nazis, BNP Sheffield candidate Mark Collett was recorded saying that the National Socialism of Adolf Hitler's Nazi dictatorship was "the best solution for German people in the 1930s", while the current BNP chairman Nick Griffin chose to promote Mark Collett to the job of BNP publicity director AFTER this Fascist traitor had been recorded praising Nazism. Even if we ignore the 72 million people who were murdered world-wide as a result of National Socialist aggression, what Hitler's Nazi regime actually achieved was a temporary economic revival that could only be sustained by short-term cash injection and re-armament policies - policies which could themselves only be sustained into the medium-term by the brutal enslavement of workers and the plundering of resources from other countries. What these achieved in the long-term was a backlash from the nations that Germany and the other Fascist nations had threatened - a backlash which not only destroyed Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime, but which left over 7 million Germans dead and which left Germany itself in a pile smouldering ruins. Some achievement! What National Socialism achieved for BRITISH people however was the devastation of Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Clydebank, Coventry, Greenock, Hull, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Swansea and Southampton, and the MURDER of 380000 British servicemen and 72000 innocent British ...

    20100620-Ski

Sunday, June 20 was just one day short of the beginning of summer, but happened to be the last day of our lift-served ski season in Utah. At first, I wasn't sure if I would participate, but I couldn't fight what's in my DNA and drove the 39 miles that separated my home from the last turns of a long season. While the weather was just perfect, the conditions weren't great around 8:30 am, as the snow was bullet-proof and made it quite hard for most skiers to get around. The snow was also generously peppered with rocks of all sizes and was a good test on everyone's maneuvering skills. At first the crowds were thin, but began to show up just after 11am which was a good enough signal for me to get ready to leave. All the skiing was around the "Little Cloud" chair and was discouraged all the way to the bottom, but on my last day, I didn't want to be a woos and ride the tram down to the resort; instead I decided to ski down, which for two-third of the way sounded like an excellent idea. Very soon, however, it began to feel like a succession of frequent taking-off-and-putting-skis-back-on, until I literally ran out of snow to slide on and had to scramble down the last steep 600 vertical feet among tree, bushes and muddy paths all the way to the parking lot and my car. This by far was the most challenging and dangerous portion of the day, but as any nut skier would say "still well worth it." See you again on snow in less than five month!

    How Home DNA Testing Works

DNA testing is used for a multitude of things in the world of investigation and it used to mean going to a doctor's office and airing your dirty laundry for all to see; but that has all changed with the advent of home DNA testing. Home DNA testing is a great way to determine paternity or if you are predisposed to certain genetic conditions. So why use home DNA testing?

Sometimes it is necessary to find out if you are or are not the father of a child. This may be something that needs to be done legally through the courts and in this case you usually have to go to a doctor's office to make it official. But if you just want peace of mind, you can use a home paternity DNA testing kit and find out for sure in a few short days.

Likewise you may want to know if you are predisposed to a number of genetic diseases as knowing can help you to understand what you can and cannot do in order to try to avoid what you may be predisposed to. You could go to a doctor's office and wait in the waiting room and then wait a number of days or weeks for the results, or you can use a home DNA test and get the results yourself and the best part is you do it when you want to.

While DNA is complicated, conducting your own DNA test at home is not. Here is how most home DNA testing kits work:

o Get a sample of your DNA: Collecting a sample of your DNA is as simple as using a swab and rubbing the inside of your cheek. The swab will come in the kit and will resemble a big Q-Tip. If you are conducting a paternity test you will also get a seperate sample swabbing of the infant in question.

o Send in your samples: Once you have swabbed the subjects that are to be tested, you then place the samples in the sealable bags that are also included in the kit and then pack those away in the provided envelope and mail them away. The lab will then take the sample or samples provided and run the appropriate tests.

o Get your results: Results can be had in as little as a couple of days and it is your choice whether to receive the results by phone, mail, or e-mail.

Now you may be thinking that a home DNA testing kit is not going to be very accurate, but you will in fact be thinking wrong. Most home testing kits will deliver results that are well over 99 percent accurate. Really with all the advances in technology today, the results are as good as or better than the tests conducted at your doctor's office.

While the privacy is a welcomed feature with home DNA testing kits, the icing on the cake is the price. You can conduct your own home DNA test for a fraction of what it would cost you at the doctor's office. This makes home DNA testing a no brainer for your peace of mind.

    Caylee

Sources: Bone Trail Found Through Woods Near Anthony Home Posted on December 14, 2008 by wjasonsmom ORLANDO, Fla. — All weekend, two official sources who spoke to WESH 2 News on the condition of anonymity, said they have been recovering more human remains in the wooded area along Suburban Drive near the home of missing Caylee Anthony. acording to one investigator, at least two dozen bones have been discovered so far, in addition to a skull with light long hair consistent with a female child. Investigators and Casey Anthonys defense team said they are operating under the assumption that the remains are those of the missing 2-year-old. Investigators said theyre still trying to determine why the childs mouth was taped shut with duct tape. At this point they said they do not believe this was meant to look like the child was killed by a kidnapper. Investigators said they believe Caylees body was dumped at the location in the woods shortly after she was killed. The bag full of human child remains was discovered by a meter reader, who went into the woods to relieve himself. Sources have described a small bone trail found outside the garbage bag, leading them to suspect that it was likely submerged for an unknown period of time and some of the remains floated out of the bag or were scattered by animals. For the first time, WESH 2 News has also confirmed that the childs body was wrapped in some sort of covering inside the bag. According to sources, it was the covering — along with ...

Test For Genital Herpes - How Do You Get Tested For Genital Hepres?

Herpes simplex infections are confirmed in several ways. Generally, the appearance of the skin eruption is strongly suggestive. Viral cultures and rapid assays (analysis of the crust and/ or the fluid inside the blister) are available. The type of test for genital herpes that is used depends on what the lesion looks like, or the morphology of the lesion.

Acute vesicular lesions, or fluid-filled blisters that are newly formed, are more likely to react positively to the rapid assay. Older, crusted patches are better diagnosed with viral culture. A viral culture is the most specific method of finding a genital herpes infection.

Another test for genital herpes is the herpes virus antigen detection test. Cells from a fresh sore are scraped off and then smeared onto a microscope slide. This test finds markers (called antigens) on the surface of cells infected with the herpes virus. This test may be done with or in place of a viral culture.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections can also be diagnosed between outbreaks by the use of a blood test.

Blood tests, which detect antibodies to HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection, can be helpful, although the results are not always clear-cut. Blood tests can find antibodies that are made by the immune system to fight a herpes infection. Antibody tests are occasionally done but are not as accurate as a viral culture at finding the cause of a specific sore or ulcer. Antibody tests cannot tell the difference between a current active herpes infection and a herpes infection that occurred in the past. Because antibodies take time to develop after the first infection, a person may not have a positive antibody test if the infection is recent. Some blood tests can tell the difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2.

A Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test for genital herpes may also be ordered to diagnose HSV. A PCR test can be done on cells or fluid from a sore or on blood or on other fluid, such as spinal fluid. PCR finds the genetic material (DNA) of the HSV virus. This test can tell the difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2. The PCR test is not often done on skin sores, but it is best for testing spinal fluid, for those rare cases in which herpes may cause an infection in or around the brain.

In all cases, it is imperative to obtain enough viral cells for testing, and careful collection methods are therefore important. All crusts should be gently removed or vesicles gently unroofed. A sterile cotton swab pre-moistened in viral culture preservative is used to swab the base of the vesicle to obtain a specimen for analysis.

Genealogy DNA Test - What is a Genealogy DNA Test?

The process of finding out who the biological parents are of a child is much easier and faster today that in the past. The results are also so accurate that there is no room for question when it comes to learning if the child is or isn't belonging to a particular individual. The emotional strain of having to wonder if a child you thought was yours really is needs to be taken care of as quickly as possible so the person can start moving forward from there.

DNA testing plays an important role in parental issues that end up in the court room including custody and child support. DNA test results can also prove infidelity and thus grounds for a divorce to be granted by the courts. The technology behind DNA testing allows us to identify the unique genetic profile of each person. This information can't be altered or duplicated.

A genealogy DNA test is 100% accurate and accepted in the scientific, medical, and legal aspects of our society. They are used to determine the parentage of a given child without any errors being made. This is important because you definitely don't want to make legal rulings on information that may be found later to be inaccurate.

In order for a court of law to accept a genealogy DNA test it has to be completed by a reputable agency by a qualified individual. There are some companies that offer home DNA test kits. While you can use the results from them for your own purposes you won't be able to use them in a court of law. There are simply too many outlets for tampering to take place.

If you have any questions about your child's biological links then you owe it to yourself and to your child to find out for sure. You can't beat the accuracy offered by DNA testing. It is one of the most advance discoveries of our society and it is being used to establish paternity all over the world. Genealogy DNA test results will help you find peace of mind.

A Dog DNA Test Kit Will Make You a Better Dog Owner

When it comes to your dog, it is too risky to not order a dog DNA test kit. Would you like it your parents played a guessing game with your health? If you do not know what breeds make up your mixed-breed dog, you might end up with a dog that howls, chews everything up and is aggressive. Then you will become impatient and angry towards your dog because you think you know how to fix the problems, but you don't.

Each breed has its own behavior pattern. For example, German Sheppards are active and must be walked and exercised every day or else they will become depressed. If you have used a dog DNA test kit and knew that your dog was part Sheppard, you would be able to communicate with him or her and understand that they are sad because they have not had enough exercise.

So how does a dog DNA test kit work? First of all, you do not have to take your dog in to see the vet. The entire process can be done in the comfort of your own home by using the swab that is mailed to you. You will collect a few cheek cells and then mail it right back to the lab. That's it, no injections and no blood tests! The sample will then be analyzed using an SNP-based DNA technology process in MMI Genomics, Inc. MMIG is the best lab in the country and they will give you the bets profile for your dog than any other lab.

When you receive your certificate and lab results, you will find a primary breed that has been identified for your dog. This will represent a large portion of your dog's breed composition. You will also receive a secondary breed description and even more breeds under the "in the mix" section.

There you have it, everything you needed to know about how a dog DNA test kit works! Congrats on deciding to do this, it makes you a better parent to your dog!

AABB Accredited DNA Testing - Which Lab to Choose?

AABB, formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks, is the accrediting agency for DNA testing laboratories worldwide. The AABB Committee for DNA Testing has developed policies and procedures which are implemented by accredited laboratories. The regulations focus on collection procedures, testing procedures, and chain of custody procedures. All court admissible testing as well as all testing completed for immigration purposes must be done by an AABB accredited lab. There are currently 43 AABB accredited laboratories worldwide. So which one should you choose for your Immigration DNA Test? There are many factors that should go into your decision to choose a DNA lab, but I'll go over three that may be most important: Turnaround time, Customer Service, and Price.

Turnaround time is crucial in an Immigration DNA test, and not all labs operate the same. The immigration process is long, but a DNA test should not be. In order to find an AABB accredited lab with a fast turnaround time you should as the following questions: How long will the process take? What shipping method do you use? Are you in communication with the U.S. Embassy and collection facility overseas? A good DNA lab will know how long the test will take, will use the fastest shipping method, and will have relationships with overseas embassies and collection facilities. This leads into the next factor of customer service.

Customer service may be the most important factor when choosing an AABB lab. Families going through the immigration process come to realize that the U.S. Immigration service is extremely difficult to get a hold of. Your DNA testing company should not be. A good DNA lab will follow up with you on a weekly basis to give you updates on your case. They'll return your inquiries in a timely manner, and do everything possible to get the test done quickly. A quality lab will have the flexibility to meet your time constraints and other special needs.

The final aspect of choosing an AABB lab is price. While the most important factors in DNA cases should be accuracy, turnaround time, and customer service, price is always important - especially in difficult economic times. The petitioner is required to pay the entire testing fee in the United States. This fee should include DNA collection in the U.S., shipping to and from overseas, all testing fees, and the shipment of results. The only fee paid overseas should be a small collection fee paid to the embassy approved physician. Pricing for DNA tests vary widely. Make sure the price you are quoted includes all of the factors above. Some AABB labs have hidden fees. Ask the following questions: Does the price include all shipping charges? Are all collection fees included? Does the fee include the test results? Are there any other fees?

When it comes time to choose an AABB lab for you immigration DNA test make sure you ask the right questions. At the end of the day it always helps to use a lab that is referred by a friend or family member.

Should You Have A Gender DNA Test For Your Unborn Child

A gender DNA test can reveal the gender of the fetus as well as showing paternity and genetic makeup. The procedure has been used because many feel it is a safer method than an amniocentesis as well as a CVS. This procedure is noninvasive where as an amniocentesis is invasive and can have risks, including inducing labor, fetal injury and in some cases termination of the pregnancy.

The gender DNA test requires taking blood from the mother who has fetal cells in her bloodstream. They isolate the Fetal DNA and will then determine the gender of the fetus. This is possible because the mother's bloodstream carries fetal DNA from the placenta throughout the body. In most cases, a laboratory technician and not a doctor do the taking of the blood and testing. Performing the test as early as ten weeks after conception tells the gender of the fetus, although some tests may show accurate results as early as six weeks.

There are many companies around today that offer kits by way of mail, for a do it yourself home test, which you then send the sample to their lab and have the blood sample tested. Are these companies legitimate? In most cases they are, although they all charge different prices for the test kits and the testing procedure.

The question, should you have a gender DNA test is so controversial because, it takes the thrill and joy away from the birth, which most women know through experience is the beautiful part of birth, the rest can be painful. Some people may decide to end a pregnancy if the gender turns out to be wrong for what they are hoping for at the time. This type of gender DNA testing is wrong. Terminating a healthy pregnancy because the gender is not what you want leaves many religious groups and abortion groups positively outraged.

The right to select the gender of your baby may at some point unbalance the creation of life because some cultures and some people prefer boys rather than girls. This will cause less female populations and could result in the distinction of an entire heritage. Asian cultures are top on this list as they do end the life of baby girls. This way of life will eventually delete the Asian population.

With all the information about the gender DNA test and what could result if people use it for gender selection, this topic will remain a hot issue in the future. Religious groups believe that the sex of your baby is God's will and will never change the way they believe. Abortion groups will continue to oppose this testing procedure if it is used for gender selection. I personally was happy to wait until my baby was born to find out the sex, and today I have a boy and a girl who have grown up and live wonderful lives.

Your Cell Phone Can Save Your Life!

Can you imagine your life without that electronic appendage of yours? I'm taking about your cell phone. Hard to imagine isn't it? If you're like most people, it's the main way that you connect with your family, friends and business associates. But few people viewed it as their literal lifeline. On 9/11 all that changed. As workers in and around the World Trade Center began running for their lives, they didn't necessarily have the time or presence of mind to grab their purses or briefcases. But many of them were smart enough to have made a habit out of always having their cell phone within reach. They grabbed the phone and were able to reach their spouses or children as they walked down the stairs, before cell phone towers gave out from the overwhelming traffic of users dialing each other all over New York and New Jersey.

    How Disaster-Ready is Your Phone?

As the workers ran down endless flights of stairs to safety, many of them learned a very important lesson.

A cell phone is only as good as its battery life and the numbers & information that are stored on it!

Let's take those lessons one at a time. The first one is easy to prevent. Keep your phone charged. The simplest way to do that is to keep a charger stand where you store your phone every evening, and charge it while you're watching TV or helping the kids with their homework. What? You don't keep your phone in the same place every night? That's another one of those habits you need to get into! What if you had to grab it to make an emergency call in the middle of the night? Or what if it begins to ring, wakes you up and you can't find it quickly enough to stop that infernal ring tone you think is so cool when it's not ringing at two in the morning!

While you're at it, purchase an extra phone charger for the office and charge it during the day while you're reading email or doing routine tasks at work.

    Making Your Cell Phone Speak

Lesson two: you've been talking to your cell phone long enough. It's time you make it speak for YOU - and in a way that can save your family's lives.

During Hurricane Katrina, the Tsunami and other recent disasters, someone came up with the idea of putting an ICE entry, (short for In Case Of Emergency), on your phone, to make your emergency contacts stand out to people reading it in an emergency. The idea quickly spread around the world, and most hospitals now look for ICE entries on the cell phones of unconscious patients.

If a disaster struck right now, where you're sitting and the only thing you could grab was your cell phone, would you have everything you need to:

    • Reach the people you love

    • Be able to communicate your vital emergency contacts

    • Be able to communicate your basic medical information if you are injured and unable to speak for yourself

    • Survive until you reach home, your loved ones or your pre-planned safe location

That's a lot of work for one little cell phone, but with some thought and planning, it's easier than you think to turn your smart phone into your very own emergency command center. In fact we're going to take this one step further to give you, hospitals and emergency personnel the information necessary to save you or your family member's life, right in your ICE contacts.

Sit down with each member of your family and decide who their two main emergency contacts are going to be. Depending on your cell phone model, you should be able to put quite a bit of information right in that one contact. The contact name of course will be ICE, but you can put the contact's first name and relationship, (for example Cynthia - Mom) in the company name field, so a doctor reading it, would know that this contact is the patient's mother.

Play around with the other fields until you fill in all the information you possibly can. For example:

    • Your emergency contact's main phone number

    • Cell number

    • Work number

    • Email Address

    • IM, Twitter and Facebook address if you need to send them emergency messages or quick updates

    • A direct URL link to your emergency contact information and basic medical history (optional)

For a second contact person, type in a second entry and name it ICE2.

Now about that last item - the direct URL Link. Let's say you (or someone you love), are unconscious and unable to give the trauma team treating you, your basic medical history. Think about this for a moment. This means that you can't tell them what medicines you're allergic to or what conditions you might have that could prove fatal, if they don't treat you, or your spouse or your child, with your personal medical histories in mind.

We always suggest that our customers use our comprehensive Grab it and Go Forms, to capture each family member's medical and vital information, insurance numbers, emergency contact numbers and other life saving information. If you don't have those forms you can make a basic version in Word or Excel. Although you don't want to record anything that could compromise you or your family - like social security numbers or financial information - make sure that you put down everything you would tell a trauma physician about you or your loved one if you were standing in front of them.

Once you have saved the documents (one for each member of the family) on your computer, print out a couple of copies of each. Place one set at home, in a safe but easy to grab location. Place another set in your and your spouse's file cabinet at work.

Now store one copy of the documents in the file manager of your personal web site, or secure online file system. Put the URL to this document or file into your cell phone. This way if you are injured, the hospital will be able to grab your medical history and extended emergency contacts. If your spouse, child or even a parent is injured and you are in another location, you can easily access that document and email it to the hospital to speed emergency treatment. You might even include a treatment consent form for your children, in case a hospital needs one to begin treating your child, before you arrive.

If your phone has the capability, you can also store those documents as well as a copy of your family's emergency plan, right in your phone, in case you ever need it while away from home. You can note the names of the documents in the ICE contact for easy retrieval.

Now you have all the information you will need, and emergency personnel treating you or your family will need, to easily locate your emergency contacts and use your medical history as a factor in your care.

Report on over the counter DNA testing kits, November 17th 2009

Pharmacies in the UK have started to sell DNA paternity testing kits over the counter. In the past, such testing could only be arranged through a court order, with the DNA samples taken by a medical professional. Will this opportunity for the general public to buy these tests, in a similar way to being able to purchase home pregnancy testing kits, be in the best interests of the children?

Home DNA Test - The Advantages and Disadvantages of Doing it Yourself

DNA results have proven to be very reliable for a variety of things including crimes and establishing paternity. You can complete a home DNA test kit for a low cost as well as to keep the fact that you are completing such a test confidential. Before you go out and buy a test kit though you need to take a close look at both the advantages and disadvantages it offers you.

A home DNA test is certainly more affordable than having one completed by a professional. A test administered by a professional can cost you at least $125 and many or much more than that. You can get a home test kit for around $25. That is quite a substantial amount of savings. The cost of a professional test depends on who is conducting it for you.

Confidentiality is a big concern when considering a DNA test. You can get this with a home test because only those you tell about it will even know you had the test done. This can help you to protect any relationships that may be adversely affected should they find out a DNA test was ever needed. For example if you want to make sure your husband is the father of your child because you had an affair early in the pregnancy you likely don't want to disclose that information to him.

With a home DNA test you can get very fast results. Once you conduct the test you will send it in to be processed. You will have the results of your test within one week. This is all very convenient and very affordable but there are some disadvantages to home kits as well.

If you need test results to help your court case you will be disappointed to discover they don't allow home DNA test results. They will only accept those that were done by a qualified company with experts conducting the test. They have to be sure the information is accurate and reliable and that just can't be established when the test was conducted by you at home.
